Moreover, it is possible you are an IT admin and still not 100% in agreement with your organization’s decision. So let us help you understand your company’s perspective.<\/p>\n

Why Organizations Are Moving Away from Qmail?<\/h2>\n

Organizations are in constant competition with their peers and don’t want to get left behind. So when a rival company gains productivity by switching over to a new platform, you might want to replicate that success. Adding a reason to leave the limited Qmail for a feature-rich Office 365.<\/p>\n

In the Qmail organization, it is responsible for everything. It is good if you want to guarantee privacy. But in industries where compliance is not that big of a deal, the business productivity suite you get with an M365 subscription is too good of an offer to refuse.<\/p>\n

However, let me make it clear. M365 has one of the strongest data protection features. It is just when you compare it to a privately owned server where the hardware is on your premises, there is more control.<\/p>\n

You might have an entirely different reason than what’s covered here. Regardless, if you use a different\/newer fork like s\/qmail, netqmail, or notqmail, and are confused whether you can use the same process, don’t worry, we will clear all doubts.<\/p>\n

Can I follow the Guide if I use NetQmail, S\/qmail, or NotQmail?<\/h2>\n

Yes, you can.\u00a0 This is because the methods we describe operate independently of the structure and version of the qmail Message Transfer Agent.<\/p>\n

The only factors that influence your ability to use the guide are the file format(MBOX\/Maildir)<\/strong> your data is kept and whether or not you use IMAP<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If you have a non-IMAP-based server with data in Maildir<\/strong>, we suggest that you either change the protocol or convert the file<\/strong> format to EML\/PST, a format that the Office 365 email client (Outlook) can process.<\/p>\n

Plus, you can start a migration directly. There are a few prerequisites you must fulfill, which are discussed in the next section.<\/p>\n

Do this Before You Migrate Qmail to Microsoft 365?<\/h3>\n

Make an Inventory of what is currently inside your Qmail environment. Admins need to be aware of how much data they have to migrate. Both migration security and the time taken for transition are directly tied to the volume of mail present in users’ accounts\/folders.<\/p>\n

Ready your M365 Tenant for receiving the Qmail data. That means the users’ accounts should be made and licensed before you move any data into them. You also have to update the MX records and other email authentication data, like setting up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC in O365<\/a><\/strong>, but it is best to do this after the migration is done.<\/p>\n

All Hands On Deck Approach of Qmail to Microsoft 365 Migration<\/h3>\n

You can either go with Microsoft’s Migration or use the Outlook Client to make Qmail data M365 compliant, like we did for iRedMail to Office 365 migration<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Microsoft migration method involves the creation of a migration endpoint in the Admin Center or PowerShell<\/a><\/strong>. So do check it out.<\/p>\n

Best Way to Quit Qmail and Migrate to Microsoft 365<\/h3>\n

Although there is no definitive survey, we guess that almost 80 to 90 % of organizations that still use Qmail or any of its forks keep their data in the default Maildir format.<\/p>\n

Only those who came from a legacy system or use some specific email client like Thunderbird keep their mailboxes in MBOX. No worries, we have an automated solution for both types of users.<\/p>\n

If you fall in the first category, i.e., you maintain a Maildir, then you must be using Postfix or some other solution for accessing the IMAP protocol, as the native Qmail data extension only works on POP.<\/p>\n
